CPCC has completed the best possible start to season 2016/17 with all 5 senior teams pulling off victories in round 1. It’s the first time 5 Plateau teams have achieved an all victory sweep since Round 13 in season 2013/14. The results have the club championship table looking very nice after 1 game.
1st Grade
Firsts successfully defended their total of 8/293, but it wasn’t all easy going. Wakehurst showed resilience through their innings after Jeff Porter-Denning ripped through their top order, dismantling the stumps of batsmen 2, 3 and 4. An unbeaten 79 from Tim Cameron was not enough to save Wakehurst from defeat as the Plateau took the final wicket with 5 overs left day’s play. Appropriately it was Jeff who claimed the last scalp to give him a thoroughly deserved 5 fa. After 65 overs Wakehurst were all out for 223. Jeff’s 5/46 off 18 was enough to earn of Player of the Day back at The Builder’s Club. Nirav Patel took 2/42 off 12 while the other wickets were shared around.
2nd Grade
Second Grade pulled off an incredible, nail-biting victory at Balgowlah Oval. With 2 wickets still in hand, St Peters required just 2 runs to surpass CPCC’s total of 202 and win the match. Enter fill-in James Balfour-Ogilvy. He managed to bowl the “in” batsman before getting the final St Peters player caught the very next ball the hand the Plateau a dramatic 1 run victory. He finished with figures of 3/37 off 10. New Plateau recruit Nick Johnson took 3/34 off 15 and the Brick, Matt Richards, recorded 2/45 off 14.
3rd Grade Blue
Things were a bit more comfortable for 3rd’s Blue. They went past Harbord’s total of 177 about 5 wickets down, thanks 38 from last week’s player of the day Chris Dwyer, 51 to Adam Pressley, 75 from Blake Conde and 39 not out to Damon Steel. Their match finished with the Plateau sitting at 6/232.
3rd Grade Gold
After already claiming first innings points last Saturday, it was only a question of whether an outright victory could be achieved for 3rds Gold. They declared overnight 34 runs ahead of Wakehurst at Nolans 3. Going back into bat, Wakehurst gained the ascendancy after throwing caution to the wind and they managed to blast themselves to 2/174 off 44 before making a sporting declaration. CPCC required 140 for an outright. Unfortunately, they could only manage 3/104 before the day was brought to a close. Opener Ryan Blackshaw scored 45. So just the first innings point but a very strong start to the season regardless!
4th Grade (Development Team)
It was another unlikely victory in 4ths. Things looked bleak for the Plateau at 6/50 and then 7/114 chasing Mona Vale’s 228. Enter Andrew Davis. He combined with Graham Neasmith for a 87 run partnership to put the Plateau in reach of victory. Dee was dismissed for 89 with CPCC still needing 28. Considering our number 11 had a broken arm, the next was a pretty important partnership. They did the job, steering 4ths to a fantastic comeback victory 8 down, off 67 overs. Neasmith ended up 36 not out and Mark Eady 24 not out. A great 4th grade debut for the development team!
So a very strong start to the season for Plateau teams and combined with great attendance at our new sponsor The Builder’s Club in Dee Why, it made a great fortnight for the club all round. Was also great to see lots of runs being scored on faster outfields. Hope everyone enjoys the long weekend off and good luck for round 2!
