By Brodie Elliott, 2nd Grade Captain
Another comprehensive 6 wicket victory to 2nd grade saw their undefeated status kept in tact and position at the top of the table maintained. A one dayer against Cromer saw fill in captain Brodie Elliott lose the toss and his team sent into the field in partially cloudy conditions.
Opening bowler Nick Bonner took no time in making a terrible mess of the Cromer top order, taking consecutive wickets on the first two deliveries of the innings. He produced an inswinging yorker to bowl the Cromer openner only to have their 1st drop depart in similar fashion the following delivery, leaving Cromer 2 wickets down without scoring. Harrison Dunn at the other end wasn’t going to be outdone by an impressive Bonner claiming 3 wickets in his 7 overs. Kavin Moorthi and Matt ‘Brick’ Richards each claimed 2 victims of their own as Cromer were reduced to a modest total of 115. Honourable mentions to Nick Armstrong who bowled without luck and looked consistently dangerous through out his spell and had a catch put down off him by the skipper himself. Additionally Cam Baber behind the stumps took a total of 3 catches during the innings.
Chasing a smallish total, 2nd grade openers Hugh Brassil and Toby Horstead made no mistake against the new ball and started the innings off with a first wicket stand of 88. Toby was eventually dismissed for 47, which was enough runs for his to become a member of a revered group reaching 5000 runs for the club and surpassing Collaroy Plateau’s living legend John Jackson in all time runs scored for the Plateau. Toby’s wicket brought about a mini collapse of several quick wickets, including that of Hugh who second top scored with 36. Eventually Ryan Dunn finished 16 not out to see 2nd grade over the line 4 wickets down and within 28 overs to earn themselves a bonus point.
2nd grades next game is at Beverly Job against reigning 2nd grade premiers Harbord.
