CPCC Outlast Cromer in Grand Final Thriller
Griffith Park, Sunday Mar 11 2012: CPCC have won the MWCA T20 Competition after a thrilling win over Cromer at Griffith Park. Skipper Tom Carden lifted the Mick Pawley Trophy for the Towers after scores were tied after the Superover. The Plateau, having hit more sixes were declared the winners. Fortunes in the game see-sawed between the two sides throughout the afternoon. Cromer scored steadily batting first but posted an average total of 142 after a late flurry of boundaries. Collaroy started well but started to lose regular wickets and fell well behind until Dan Schimek and Pete Henriksen got together. Dan brought the 10 run an over rate down to a run a ball with brilliant, pure six hitting, much to the enjoyment of the healthy Plateau crowd. When Dan left the crease, Pete Henriksen (batting with a broken finger) and Nick Bonner kept the boundaries going leaving only several runs to get off the final ball. In a dramatic last over, the Towers could only tie the score sending them into their second Superover situation of the competition. Schimack started hot, despatching the tall Cromer quick’s first ball over mid wicket and into the dirt pile but skied the next one to the keeper. Cromer needed ten to win, then two off the last ball. Amid the chaos that ensued, the Cromer batsman was run out going for the winning run by centimetres leaving the scores tied once again. CPCC, having hit more 6’s in the match, were declared the winners! The win was a great feather in the cap for the Club as the T20 squad included members from five of our Senior grades.

Rob Minnett’s Recount:
As I mentioned, this was an amazing game of Cricket. Fortunes swayed multiple times throughout the match. We tied the match for the second time in the T20 Season. So we were off to Super Over again. From my perspective the last over went something like this: CPCC had scored 9 in the Super Over, setting Cromer 10 runs to win the match. Nick Bonner was bowling & I was the wicket keeper. The first delivery was an off-side wide (1 run of zero balls). The first ball was hit for 4 (5 runs of 1 ball). We thought we were gone. The next ball came straight to me and the batsmen started to run, I under-armed the ball over the batsman to the bowlers end, effecting a run-out and saving a run. Magnificent bowling from Nick produced only 2 runs from the next 3 balls (7 runs from 5 balls). Could we win? Not only was the last ball a wide, it skidded & I somehow managed to stop another 4 extras which would have ended the match (8 runs from 5 balls). Last ball – Take 2: Life went into slow motion: the ball is hit to cover and the tying run is scored: the ball is thrown to me and I take the bails off: to my surprise, the batsman has held his ground and is not out: he needs to make it to the other end to win the match: again I under-arm the ball: Mick Mackin grabs and flicks the ball back to the stumps and runs the batsman out by inches: meanwhile I collapse from the adrenalin. Fantastic game, Go Plateau.
